St. Augustine is the Oldest Continually Inhabited European City in the United States | #84Bing

It's time for another #84Bing Search of the Day!

Today, I learned that St. Augustine, Florida was founded by the Spanish Empire in 1556. After being raided by the English, Castillo de San Marcos was built to defend the colony. Although it withstood two major attacks, it was treaties and land exchanges that would see it change hands multiple times between the Spanish, the English and U.S.

This location has definitely gained my attention and I would love to add it to my Travel Wishlist.

Check out 'St Augustine Florida' on Bing

#84Bing Search of the Day\ Harbin Ice and Snow Festival\

via The Guardian

January 06, 2019\\
California, USA\\

Happy Sunday, World!

The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival is featured on the Bing homepage, today and it is also our:

#84Bing Search of the Day
A winter wonderland in Northeast China https://binged.it/2sdB10B

The initial draw to my eyes was the beautiful image of a colorful coastline that only grew more intriguing when the Bing Quiz reveals that this entire construction is made of ice!

These are some of my favorites.

Here's some more images: Bing Image Search

The festival has it's roots in an ice lantern show and winter garden party in 1963. It's a relatively new tradition by Chinese cultural standards but, after merging with the International Ski Festival in 2001 it has grown in popularity around the world.

Ice is harvested from the Songhua River and sculptors create from many inspirations including, mythical beings, famous people and even replicas of monuments and buildings from all over the world.

#84Bing Search of the Day: corneal cross-linking | #science #keratoconus

Bing Search of the Day:

Corneal Cross-Linking

PHOTO: From the American Optometric Association

Keratoconus is a degenerative eye disease that causes the cornea to grow abnormally, distorting the light received by the retina and causing multiple or blurry images.

There is currently no cure for keratoconus but, there are several treatments to slow down the effects and restore vision. Unfortunately, they do not include LASIK and some extreme cases, glasses are also ineffective.

One option on the table is a corneal transplant. Surgery, especially on the eye is extremely invasive. Doctors have been gradually improving technique and seeing positive results. Even still, it is not a solution to freedom from corrective eyewear.

Perhaps the most advanced technique in treating keratoconus, today is corneal cross-linking. It was approved by the FDA in 2016 and even earlier in Europe. The procedure involves saturating the cornea in riboflavin (Vitamin B2, which occurs naturally in the eye) and applying UV Light in order to strengthen the cornea and slow are stop the progression of abnormal growth on the surface of the eye.

Do you, or someone you know, deal with this issue?
Have they tried any of these treatments?
How did it go?

Cheers,
Josh

#84Bing Search of the Day: polar bears swimming

Bing Search of the Day:
Polar Bears Swimming

It's International #PolarBearDay!

Today, Bing taught me a few Polar Bear facts:

1. The country of Greenland has a Polar Bear on her coat of arms.

2. Polar Bears have been recorded swimming up to 220 miles!

3. A Polar Bears fur is not actually white. It's transparent!

I also found this gallery from ABC News of the Zoo in Moscow:

84places to the San Diego Zoo

I've joined ko-fi.com, a site that allows people to support content creators by buying them a "coffee".

My first goal has been set. It's a Day Pass to the San Diego Zoo! I'd love to go see the Big Cats, the Wolves and the Birds of Prey. Help me get there and I'll take lots of pics and share an #84places travel blog with you, here!

Also, there would be lots of exclusive stuff at the $1Blog on Patreon.

Cheers,
Josh

#84Bing Search of the Day: "propagate succulents" #clubbouquet

Bing Search of The Day:Propagate Succulents

They are some the easiest plants to care for and yet, they're some of the easiest to mess up with overwatering.

That said, I enjoy succulents. They're cheap, thrive in the climate I live in and they look very cool.

Add that to the idea of propagation, the art of growing new plants from cuttings of existing plants, they're essentially, FREE!

(I've also taken an interest in propagating roses. Follow #ClubBouquet to keep an eye on my progress)

I haven't had any initial success with propagation just yet but, I'm having some with growing succulents and roses and I've just introduced a diy greenhouse to my operation. I expect success.

Do you garden?

Cheers,

#84Bing Search of the Day: 7 Wonders

Bing Search of the Day: 7 Wonders of the World

I'm a huge fan of Assassin's Creed: Origins which takes place in Ancient Egypt. If you're not familiar with the the game, it's quite realistic and many of the Ubisoft AC titles have been compared to interactive history lessons, give or take some fantasy, of course.

Thanks in part to that and the Pyramid Code documentary currently airing on Netflix, I've recently taken fascination with the pyramids of Egypt.

Photo from Bing Search

One of my favorite subjects in grade school was World History, Ancient Egypt in particular.

That led me to "wonder", what else is there to see?

It turns out, besides the Great Pyramid of Giza, none of the original Wonders even exist anymore! (The Ancient Greeks made the original list.)

Follow this link to read more about the 7 MODERN Wonders of the World.

In the meantime, here's what I found on the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World on Bing.

What are the seven wonders of the world?

The original seven wonders of the world are seven sites known to the Ancient Greeks as the most notable locales in their known world. They are:

Colossus of Rhodes

Great Pyramid of Giza
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
Statue of Zeus at Olympia
